Doctoral research

PhD thesis & key outcomes

University of Turin · PhD in Medical Physiopathology · 2018–2022. Doctoral research integrated renal functional reserve testing with longitudinal urinary extracellular-vesicle phenotyping in living kidney donors before and after nephrectomy.

University of Turin

Renal Function Reserve (RFR) in Living Donor Renal Transplantation (LDRT) and Phenotypic Characterization of Urinary Extracellular Vesicles (uEVs) Pre and Post Nephrectomy

Prospective living-donor study combining oral protein-load renal stress testing with pre-nephrectomy and day-7 post-nephrectomy urinary EV phenotyping.
Key outcomes

Renal adaptation and urinary-EV phenotyping after living kidney donation

28 living kidney donors enrolled; renal stress testing showed a significant GFR response to protein load (p=0.0001) with reported RFR of 29.5 (4.2–100) mL/min/1.73 m².

Urinary EVs were profiled before nephrectomy and again 7 days later. Post-nephrectomy increases in progenitor-associated CD133 and CD24 signals were observed, supporting their investigation as candidate indicators of renal adaptation and regenerative responses rather than validated clinical biomarkers.
